Night City Beat

By Sharea Harris

i. working

chipped pink polish
tired eyes framed in running
mascara              night shift

the cocktail of life
catches warm and sticky in
red lace, rinse. repeat

ii. drinking

train blares as city
bus blows past. “One mo’ step
and I was almost gone!”

iii. we are all suicidal

streets catch light, the stars
have thrown for
millennia -
who will catch me?
